176E: Crab pinched Melissa’s toe

A book of rhymes, one of which was “Under the raft Melissa dived to find some shells for Joe. But all she found was seaweed, and a crab that pinched her toe.” Also. Billy’s bouncing ball as big as he which ended up in a tree and one about a black cat covered in flour. Thank you.

This is a large format (approx. legal size) Golden Book (or maybe Whitman) – the pages are board and it’s spiral bound. I’m pretty sure it was meant to teach vocab such as under over in and out. Other rhymes included one with two fluffy kittens who got covered in flour.

I had this book and my name is Melissa so I remember this one vividly. I don’t have it with me but I’ll try to figure out the title, I know I’ve done it once before when it came up as a stumper somewhere!

I am home for the holidays and have the book in my hands. It is Where did everbody go? Funny rhymes about place words : a Golden Preschool learning book. Written by Norah Smaridge and illustrated by George Bukett. Copyright 1971 (the copy I have is marked second printing 1972). It has the number 12176 in the upper left corner which I presume is its number in the Golden Book catalog. It is roughly legal paper in size with cardboard pages and the covers are teal with green comb binding. The poem about Billy is Billy went bouncing up and down/ (His ball is as big as he!)/ He bounced so hard, he left the yard/ And now he’s up in a tree! I hope you find a copy
