176D: White Dog with Red Ears/ The WIld Hunt / YA Fantasy /1960s or 70s

YA book I read around the 70’s. Fantasy genre. Some kids find an odd-looking stray dog – white with red ears; maybe eyes that glow? They want to adopt the dog. They find out the dog is from the Wild Hunt. The dog isn’t supposed to be in the mortal world. British folklore references.

Sounds like ‘Dogs Body by Diane Wynne Jones. “Sirius the Dog Star has been convicted of the murder of a fellow luminary. As his punishment, he is sent down to earth to live as a dog, in which form he will die unless he can recover the mysterious Zoi.

With only dim memories of the star-world from which he has fallen, Sirius embarks on his seemingly impossible quest. Struggling to overcome the obstacles placed in his way by worldly as well as other-worldly forces, Sirius discovers that he must join the cold frosty hounds of the underworld in their midnight hunt. Only then can he make his request to their shadowy master.”

I would second “Dogsbody” by Diana Wynne Jones. The story has three children in it, two English brothers and their cousin Kathleen, who is Irish and living with them. As I recall, they rescue the dog (who is actually Sirius, the Dog Star) from the river, and he definitely had red ears and a white coat and unusual green eyes. It’s the unusual eyes that make him seem super intelligent (which he is) and Kathleen wants to adopt the dog but her aunt is not so excited. The story does also involve the Wild Hunt and other Hunt dogs that all look like Sirius, minus the green eyes. This is a good book, as are all of Diana Wynne Jones’s books.
