The plot rang a bell and after a search, I found the book I was thinking of THE FOUR GALLANT SISTERS adapted from the Brothers Grimm by Eric A. Kimmel ; illustrated by Tatyana Yuditskaya. The notes say it was a combination of two of the Grimms’ tales but the summaries of the book don’t list which stories. I know you remembered seven sisters, but it might be worth checking this book (you can see a picture of the cover online) and maybe the book you’re thinking of is from one of those original Grimm stories.
