246B: An award winner with a Polynesian theme

Searching for a children’s book printed no later than the 1990s. The cover featured an illustration of a Hawaiian girl in the foreground, with a volcano in the background. I think the book title may have included a Hawaiian girl’s name, but I’m not sure about that. I believe it had received an award; I think there was a gold seal featured on the cover as well. Hope you can help identify the book title and author!!!

Not Hawaiian, but Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell, about a Native American girl who lives on a Pacific island, has had several covers that look like what you describe. Do an image search and see if you recognize one. Zia is the sequel

Thank you, Celeste, but it’s not Island of the Blue Dolphins. The book I’m looking for was definitely set in Hawaii. I’ve been searching images for weeks now…but will keep it up! Many thanks for sharing your thoughts!

You don’t mention if it was a fiction/chapter book or a picture book. But if it was non-fiction picture book, it could have been The Last Princess: The Story of Princess Ka’Iulani of Hawai’i by Stanley.

There is a chapter book by Gloria Skurzynski from her Mysteries at the National Parks series called Rage of Fire. It’s set on Hawaii, and the cover is right, so…

Thank you for your thoughts, Kelly. The book I (and my daughter) are trying to recall was an illustrated children’s picture book, about a fictional girl in Hawaii. We had a hardcover edition.

In the late 80s/early 90s, there was a publisher who came out with a series of books written by children and submitted for a contest. There was one that was based on a Hawaiian legend, written by a girl in Hawaii. The books all had a gold or silver seal on them, because, by being published, they had ‘won’ the contest. Unfortunately, I can’t remember the publisher. Rainstock? Rain-something, I think. I don’t think it was Raintree, which is still around, but it could have been. One of the other winning titles was about a leprauchaun, and another about a family doll. I don’t know if the Hawaii title was your book, but it could have been.
