167D: Girl wants to play, toys are asleep (solved)

Picture book about a little girl who doesn’t want to go to bed. Her parents tuck her in and after they leave she gets up to go play with her toys, but they are all asleep so she goes to bed too. I think I remember blocks and dolls. Book was published in early 80s or earlier. Maybe Little Golden Book

I bet I know this one: Good Morning, Good Night, written by Jane Werner and illustrated by Eloise Wilkin, originally published in 1948. The cover is divided into two parts. The upper part, which is above a “line” running diagonally from the lower left to the upper right corner of the cover, has a yellow background with the illustration of a boy and the “Good Morning” part of the title. The lower part has a dark blue/purple background, the illustration of a girl, and the “Good Night” part of the title. There are two stories contained in the book: one about a boy who is difficult to get up in the morning, and the other about a girl who doesn’t like to go to sleep. My memory re the boy is that all sorts of efforts are made to wake him up, and what finally succeeds is a black panther who licks his face. My memory re the girl is consistent with the poster’s memory: the girl wants to stay up, but all the toys, including blocks, dolls, and a Noah’s Ark, have been put away for the night and everyone else is sleeping, so finally she goes to sleep herself. The poster recalls only the girl’s portion and thought the book may have come out around the 1980s, so maybe they brought just the girl’s part out as a separate book at some point, but the one we had growing up had both stories.

Got myself a copy and that is indeed the book. Thanks so much! I loved this book when I was little and have been wondering about it for years. Funny enough, I don’t remember anything about the little boy’s section.

That’s great! I’m so glad it was the right one. I loved this book too (and many, many of the other Little Golden Books we had).

That may be it! I found some pictures of inside pages and I definitely recognize some. It’s in the style I think I remember as well. I’ll have to hunt one down now to confirm. Thanks so much!!!
