I think this might be part of Transatlantic by Colum McCann. Other parts were Frederick Douglass’ visit to Ireland and a pioneering transatlantic flight. The granddaughter journalist covers the flight.
Oh my gosh – that’s it! I didn’t believe it until I went back and looked at the book again. Was so sure that was the gist of the book – and not just one small part of it.
