James M. Cain (1892-1977) was a novelist whose "violent, sexually obsessed, and relentlessly paced melodramas epitomized the “hard-boiled” school of writing that flourished in the United States in the 1930s and ’40s. He was ranked with Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler as one of the masters of the genre. Three classics of the American screen were made from his novels: Double Indemnity (1936; film 1944), Mildred Pierce (1941; film 1945, TV miniseries 2011), and The Postman Always Rings Twice (1934; stage version 1936, films 1946, 1981)."  [https://www.britannica.com/biography/James-M-Cain].

In Past All Dishonor, a Confederate spy risks his life to win the heart of a fallen woman. Early in the Civil War, the Confederacy sends Roger Duval to Sacramento, to keep an eye on the situation in California in hopes of turning the Western territory towards the Southern cause. It’s a plush assignment, well out of the line of fire, but Duval hasn’t been there long before he comes into mortal danger. On a swim in the Sacramento River, he gets knocked on the head by a paddleboat, and is drowning in the muck when Morina, a quick-witted woman of the night, tosses him a rope. Suffocated by instant, irresistible love, Roger follows Morina to her home turf: Virginia City, Nevada. For the miners, gamblers, and gunfighters who populate this hardscrabble town, her price is negotiable. But for a man in love, she charges a thousand dollars. Roger will sacrifice body, mind, and soul to get that money—but will his sacrifice be enough to make her love him?

Dust jacket in protective mylar cover; head of spine torn above lettering; bottom of spine and corners chipped; red cloth with gilt lettering on spine; previous owner's signature in ink on front pastedown; binding tight; text clean and bright. G/G
