And what a relief that is too, because this oft-requested book is next to impossible to find, is not listed in the Library of Congress, even though the title everyone remembers IS correct. Re-issue date is fall 2001, with a nice price of $8.95 (very nice). I even have signed copies.... Seymour, Dorothy Z. Ann Likes Red. Purple House Press, 2001. New hardback, $8.95 Every
once in a while, Loganberry receives review copies of new books.
What does the bookseller (and her assistant) do with these books?
Review them, of course. When It Rained Cats and Dogs
is a poem first published in 1946. This version features new, full-color
illustrations. You can't rush through it, because the poem doesn't
scan naturally, so it takes a minute to decipher how you're meant to read
the thing aloud and make it work. This might not be an issue, as
the book lends itself to repeated readings. A little practice will
get Mom or Dad into the groove. This is a great cozy-time book.
You may spend more time talking about the pictures than reading the text.
Jerome's style is soft and peaceful, and her illustrations glow with late
summer light. Dogs descending with balloons, puppies landing in trees
and kitties jumping on trampolines will amuse you and your little one.
The poem on its own is okay, but the illustrations turn this book into
a gleeful reading experience. Meadow Geese Press seems to be a really small
outfit, but this project is a quality production, and I'll be interested
in seeing what this publisher does next. Fun book.
