Stump the Bookseller114E: child threatens misbehaving teddy bear with boogeyman
This was a rhyming book or poem from the 60s. It began, “My teddy bear was bad one day, I could not get him to obey” the child tries to scare the bear into behaving with a scary description of the boogeyman and I think it ends “I don’t believe it said my bear, and neither did I so we left it there.”

Live Music

Red Brick RhoadesRed Brick Rhoades
Friday, May 31, 7-8:30 pm

~ Friday night music ~
Singer-songwriter, Red Chrosniak, learned guitar to make his habit of doodling lyrics on old envelope backs both productive and sustainable. Far from her native prairie, Becca Rhoades lends her improvisational fiddling skills and a little of her Texas drawl to the songs he writes. Red and Becca started playing together upon discovering their shared love of heart-free dancing, getting lost, and making both mischief and music. Their voices create a sweet lyrical blend with the fiddle harmonies and their onstage chemistry is often augmented with cheeky interplay. Red Brick Rhoades offers original songs about the permutations of love, the trials and tribulations of life, and the joys of moonlight, moonshine, and being moonstruck. Check out a sample

CaganSteve Cagan: Women and Children of Colombia

Thursday, June 6, 6-8pm
~ first Thursdays ~
Award-winning photographer Steve Cagan returns home to Cleveland to exhibit some of the evocative images he captured while photographing the people of Colombia’s Pacific coast rain forest. While this collection focuses on the women and children of the region, Steve spent the past nine years traveling and documenting the region in hopes of discovering and distilling the “social reality” of the area. These unforgettable photographs offer a glimpse into the lives of the region’s inhabitants. Steve has previously exhibited his pieces in cities all across the globe, including the Bibliotheque National in Paris, and Rio de Janeiro’s Museo de Arte Moderna. Steve is also a talented and enthusiastic educator, and was named Teacher of the Year at Rutgers University in 1991. He most recently taught photography at Case Western Reserve University, following stints at Cleveland State and Cuyahoga Community College, as well as universities in El Salvador and Germany.  Exhibition continues through July 1.

~ Friday Night Music series ~
Inspired by a wide range of music, you can hear the echoes of an array of American musical traditions intertwined with modal explorations and occasional forays into noise and drone.  Istvan Medgyesi played at Larchmere Porchfest in 2009, and we're pleased to welcome him (and all his instruments) back to the Larchmere neighborhood.  Donations for the band gratefully accepted.

What’s on your summer reading list? Now’s the time to share your interesting, unusual, and otherwise noteworthy reads with other bibliophiles at our semi-annual Show and Tell session.  Anything goes: you can bring treasured tomes and tell us about them, or you can bring odd curiosities you know nothing about and let group members tell you what they think.  Either way, there’s always something to learn and some great books to discuss.  Bring a book and join us!

Shoeless JoeW.P. Kinsella: Shoeless Joe
Thursday, June 27, 2013, 7pm
~ fourth Thursdays ~
“If you build it, he will come.”
These mysterious words inspire Ray Kinsella to create a cornfield baseball diamond in honor of his hero, Shoeless Joe Jackson. What follows is a rich, nostalgic look at one of our most cherished national pastimes and a remarkable story about fathers and sons, love and family, and the inimitable joy of finding your way home.

Friday, June 28, 7:00-8:30pm
~ fourth Fridays ~

Friday Music
Brian HenkeBrian Henke
Friday, July 5, 7:00-8:30pm
~ Friday music series ~
Brian Henke composes and performs his music like a painter putting images on canvas, a kind of sonic shaman, drawing his inspiration from the natural world around him.  His unique guitar style has been called everything from Folk to New Age to Neoclassical to Pastoral or, as Brian like to call it, "a big stewpot of everything stirred up, simmered, and served to taste."  His music appeals to everyone who likes their music lyrical, thought provoking and performed with virtuosity.  Through it all is an undercurrent of spirituality and mysticism that Brian says is very much a part of the creative process. Check out a sample. Donations for the band gratefully accepted.

Mary Doria Russell: The Sparrow
Thursday, July 25, 7-8:30pm
~ fourth Thursdays ~
In 2019, humanity finally finds proof of extraterrestrial life when a listening post in Puerto Rico picks up exquisite singing from a planet which will come to be known as Rakhat. While United Nations diplomats endlessly debate a possible first contact mission, the Society of Jesus quietly organizes an eight-person scientific expedition of its own. What the Jesuits find is a world so beyond comprehension that it will lead them to question the meaning of being "human." When the lone survivor of the expedition, Emilio Sandoz, returns to Earth in 2059, he will try to explain what went wrong.  Mary Doria Russell will join the discussion.
