Hedda's kittenhood

I always wanted a cat.  I used to tell my parents I wanted a cat, and that when I was a grown-up, I would have cats.  They would smile and wink, and say, sure, when I was an adult and had my own home, I could have cats.  I finished my master's before I considered myself "grown-up" enough for this responsibility, read some books on cat care, and went about the task of finding my friend.  For some reason, I rather wanted a calico or tortoise-shell cat.  I called the Cleveland Animal Protective League, but they didn't have any.  They referred me to a woman who ran a cat rescue operation out of her home, though, and who had recently taken in a very young litter of kittens found abandoned at Edgewater Park.  I went to see them, and discovered Hedda.  She looked me right in the eye, and I had no question about which kitten I wanted to adopt...
