The Caldecott Medal was established in 1938 and is presented annually by the American Library Association to the illustrator of the most distinguished American picture book for children.  It has been the standard of excellence for children's books and is well respected by librarians, teachers, parents, collectors, and of course, children.  As a collection, Caldecott winners are an impressive history of publishing, illustration, story, and social climate of the times. Perhaps this is why they are so collectible as a group, and why the first editions remain among the most-sought after of all children's books.  Due to lasting popularity, many titles remain in print as well.  In addition to the Caldecott Medal, one or more Caldecott Honors are also awarded each year.  Here is the list of winners.
