The
Caldecott Medal was established in 1938 and is presented annually by
the
American Library Association to the illustrator of the most
distinguished
American picture book for children. It has been the standard of
excellence
for children's books and is well respected by librarians, teachers,
parents,
collectors, and of course, children. As a collection, Caldecott
winners
are an impressive history of publishing, illustration, story, and
social
climate of the times. Perhaps this is why they are so collectible as a
group, and why the first editions remain among the most-sought after of
all children's books. Due to lasting popularity, many titles
remain
in print as well. In addition to the Caldecott Medal, one or more
Caldecott Honors are also awarded each year. Here is the list of
